Though it's not every dog's cup of tea, some of these furry friends thoroughly enjoy visiting dog parks. These places allow our canine companions to mingle with other dogs and run around leash-free.

In Grand Junction, there are two major dog parks. One of these parks can be found at Canyon View Park and the other is a stone's throw away from Las Colonias Amphitheatre.

However, it won't be long before the dog park at Las Colonias will be closing a couple of sections of the park, but the reasoning behind the closure is solid.

Why is Grand Junction Colorado's Las Colonias Dog Park Closing Two Sections?

On October 1, 2024, the Las Colonias dog park in Grand Junction will be closing its east and middle sections for roughly eight months, encompassing the entire winter season and the beginning of spring.

Parks Maintenance Supervisor Cody Wright explains that the grass planted at the dog park isn't your typical lawn but rather a special type known as dog tough turf.

This African hybrid type of grass is unique not only in the way that it serves as the perfect lawn for the dog park, but because it's a hybrid it cannot be regrown by seed each year.

This is why the dog park must allocate sections of the park to recover from the summertime frolicking by countless dogs each winter and spring and this year it's the middle and east sections' turn to take a break.
