A Contagious Winter Illness Is Spreading Quickly in Colorado

Colorado residents need to remain vigilant this cold and flu season. On top of normal illnesses that are common this time of year, 2024 has been a terrible year for whooping cough in the Centennial State.

We're taking a closer look at some concerning news from the CDC about the spread of Pertussis (whooping cough) in the Mountain West, and what you can do to avoid it.

CDC Trends in December

The Center for Disease Control's National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System shows Colorado reported 19 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) for the week ending December 14, 2024 (Week 50). CDC Data shows an unusually high number of cases of Pertussis in the Mountain West. Idaho leads the way with 910 cases so far, followed by Arizona with 735 cases, and then Colorado with 627 cases of whooping cough this year.

Getting To Know Whopping Cough

Pertussis, aka whooping cough, is a very contagious illness caused by bacteria. Symptoms include coughing fits followed by a “whooping” sound as the person struggles to breathe.

• Early Symptoms: Like a common cold—coughing, runny nose, mild fever, and occasional sneezing.
• Persistent Coughing: After 1-2 weeks, the cough becomes more intense and frequent.
• Other Symptoms: Fatigue, vomiting after coughing fits, and difficulty breathing.

Treatment for Pertussis

Protect yourself from this highly contagious illness by keeping good hygiene and washing your hands. While there is a vaccination for pertussis, it's possible to avoid it by staying away from sick people and washing your hands frequently.

The most common treatment for whooping cough is antibiotics. Erythromycin, azithromycin, or clarithromycin can kill Bordetella pertussis bacteria. Fever reducers and cough suppressants can also help support someone who is sick. Rest and staying hydrated are important factors in recovery.
