What You Need To Know About Cremating Colorado Pets At Home

One of the largest wildfires to burn in Colorado in 2024 was the Bucktail Fire in Montrose County. The fire burned for 21 days in August before it was contained. The Bucktail fire burned 7,078 acres North of Nucla, Colorado.

KKCO reports a recent arrest affidavit named 63-year-old Montrose County resident Brent Garber as a suspect connected to the fire based on physical evidence.

Cremation Gone Wrong?

Officials believe that Garber was attempting to cremate his dog when he trespassed on private property on August 1st, 2024. An affidavit containing a report from Police Cmdr. Bruce Schmalz says Garber was spotted riding in an ATV in the area where the fire started that day. The fire was traced to a dugout area Garber used to cremate his dog recently put down following a municipal court order. A small stone above the dugout allegedly read, "Rocket Dog. Rest in Peace Buddy."

It is not against the law to cremate your pet at home in Colorado, but the city and county you live in may have their guidelines or penalties. According to trupointmemorials.com, cremating a small animal at home will require wood, charcoal, and likely a stump remover with Potassium nitrate to create the heat necessary to turn the animal to ashes.
