In today's age of technology it just seems that you cannot trust anybody. One Colorado man found out the hard way that even when thing seem "totally legit," you could still be getting conned.
As a person who is kind of looking for a "new to me" vehicle, the idea of finding a reasonable deal on Facebook that ends up draining my checking account of the price of the vehicle, strikes fear into my gut.
Honestly, this isn't about some uniformed person not knowing better; this is a very intricate scam.
Colorado Man Gets Ripped Off Buy Truck Off of Facebook Marketplace
This story just has me deciding to not even think about buying a car off of Facebook Marketplace. According to KKTV, a man who live in Eagle County saw a great deal on a pickup in Houston; he flew out there, bought it, and then it all went downhill.

Clearly, the truck was in good condition, hence the man purchased it. The scam comes in a couple of ways:
- The man was only given one fob. This scam has the "seller" of the vehicle coming for the car after the sale and stealing it back, using that other fob. Authorities found a tracking device attached to the truck, as well.
- The title, the VIN paperwork, the license plates all looked legitimate, but they did find that they'd all been forged in one way or another, and it was a stolen vehicle.
Since it was a stolen truck, the insurance company that had paid out on the claim took possession of the truck, leaving the Colorado man out of luck.
The Eagle County Sheriff's Office gave this advice:
If you see a deal online that’s too good to be true, trust your instincts, especially if it might be listed below market value. DO NOT USE CASH. Utilize guaranteed funds like certified checks or a payment method that offers fraud protection..
